Shots

Below is the basic outline of each shot which my group produced while planning our thriller.

  • Shot one – starts with a black screen and fades into the red lights of the dark room. It is an over the shoulder shot of the murder dropping the photo paper into the tray in the darkroom.

  • Shot two – begins with the meeting of two characters on the corner of the crossroads. One character is a boy the other is a girl, they are both holding missing posters and generally talking. The girl and boy separate in walking down different streets.

  • Shot three – returns to the dark room....the camera shot is a close up on the tap...murder is washing his hands.  Dripping water in the background

  • Shot four – the camera is placed so the girl can be seen leaving one house and follows her round to Catlin’s house.

  • Shot five – point of view shot of Catlin’s house....camera acts as the audience looking at the house.

  • Shot six – returns to the dark room.....close up on picture in the tray now the picture is beginning to come through some of it visible.

  • Shot seven – girl knocks on the door but the door is not shut properly so opens.

  • Shot eight – this is followed by a low angle camera shot of characters feet walking into the house.

  • Shot nine – Girl looks around hallway and places the missing posters down on the table. Girl notices ring on the table.

  • Shot ten – next to the poster is a ring....the ring is of her missing friend. Camera has a close up on the ring.

  • Shot eleven – FLASH BACK! This is of someone giving the missing girl the ring.

  • Shot twelve – girl panics and runs to the door and begins to opening it however door is locked. (close up on handle of the door)

  • Shot thirteen – returns to the dark room.....camera follows along a piece of string containing photos of different young girls dead and focus on the last photo being hung up by the murder of character in the house. This is followed by a scream.

  • Shot fourteen – MISSING title appears suddenly after the scream.

Music

As a team we thought music was a key aspect to a successful opening for our film. We looked through many sites at copyright free music to try and find a piece which created tension but also suited our film idea. We found two pieces of music which we liked the links are below because we thought the two pieces suited we decided to combined them together to create a new piece.

Location

In the beginning of planning our thriller opening we thought about location. The two location we are going to use within our thriller opening are a house and a darkroom.

We choose to use a darkroom as by using a dark place a sense of mystery will be created. Due to the red lights you will only be to see close objects therefore what is beyond the red lights is the unknown and enhances the mystery which will be created in the scene. Our idea is to show the murders hands developing a photo of his target, we want to do an over the shoulder shot of the murder as well but we intend to keep the murders face hidden to create more suspense.

As you can see above this is the darkroom we are using. I think by using a red light it could be interpreted as danger or a warning due to the colour. This will add to the suspense we intend to create in the opening scene.

The other place which we intend to film in is the house. We choose to use an ordinary looking house to create more suspense as it seems to the viewer that this could happen to anyone even themselves which helps to build tension within the opening scene.

Analysing Thriller Openings

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Media studies is completely new to me so i have learnt much in a short period of time. To begin the course we used digital camera's to look at different camera shots. Even though using a digital camera was an area I was familiar in using identifying and producing certain camera shots I was not. We looked at shots such as high angle shots, low angle shots, over the shoulder shots and point of view shots and produced a leaflet showing these. In doing this it has helped me to think about where to place the camera and the effect it has on the audience in choosing that shot. Therefore, when beginning my preliminary task I took angle shots highly into consideration as well as looking at them in analysing films.

Another major area I was unfamiliar with was editing. In producing my preliminary task I was able to learn some basics of editing. This included features such as translations, slide effect for example making it black and white, how to change the speed of a piece of film and adding sound. By doing these editing skills it has made me realise the importance of editing when producing a film. Even though I have only learnt basic skill I realise you have to be precisest and accurate and you constantly have to think what affect does this have on the audience when producing and editing a successful film.
