Notes for my Evaluation video

1)      In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
  • The red lights used in the darkroom could suggest the connotation of a warning or danger mainly due to the colour red. By placing the murderer in this scene it gives the audience the idea of him being a danger to them and his next victim. By using a darkroom to film this scene it creates shadows and silhouettes and falls under typical thriller iconography.
  • The murderer is a black silhouette the connotations of black can be seen as an evil which would suit the characteristics of the villain. By hiding his face and his figure dramatic irony is used and by withholding information from the viewer it helps to keep the audience engaged within our thriller opening.
  • Unconventional thriller – normal clothes, typical cast, typical house. By doing this it makes it seem that this could happen to anyone and therefore creates more tension in the thriller.
  • The music is eerie and due to the lack of speech engages with the audience more within our opening.
 2)      How does your media product represent particular social groups?
·        Villain – murderer. Is male as they tend to have a more intimidating appearance on set than a female character. We choose to cast and more muscled and bigger male character so the character was not seen as vulnerable and had an intimidating appearance on set.
·        Victim – is female we choose to use a female character as they are seen as more vulnerable. By making her a younger character I think it allows the audience to emphasizes more with the character. Younger character creates more emotion as seen in ‘the lovely bones’ a thriller personally inspired me with my ideas within the group.

3) What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
·        I looked at the two films which influenced my ideas most to see what company I believe would best suit my thriller when disturbing it. One hour photo – Fox Searchlight Pictures – was established in 1994 is specialises in British films particularly in horror and comedy dramas. . Lovely bones – Paramount Pictures – are an American film company established in 1912 and has its headquarters in Hollywood.
·        In looking at the background of both I have decided that Fox Searchlight Pictures would be my ideal institution to distribute my media product. The reasons are it specialises in British films and therefore I believe would support our thriller. They also launched and supported one hour photo which is of a similar genre and idea to ours and therefore I believe our thriller would appeal to them.

4) Who would be the audience for your media product?
  • Through looking through my audience research I believe that young adults our film would most appeal to. Age rage 15 – 25. This is through looking at my questionnaire results I can come to a conclusion of this age range.
  • Looking through the comments it seems that most people like mystery in there thrillers this is a factor which I believe is in my film and therefore will allow my thriller to appeal to a wider age group.

5) How did you attract/address your audience?
  • We posted our opening of our rough thriller onto your tube and gain feedback from that. This allowed us to take criticism to therefore make it more appeal to the audience of young adults. The main comments consisted of the sound some people did not like the sound and others said it was too quite. To improve on this we re edited the two pieces of sound in garage band to improve the music. We then timed them better with the clips in the film. By making these changes I believe that we have overcome these errors within the clip.
  • We also did a screening in college. The audience consisted of young adults between 15- 25 which is who we believe will be our main audience in watching our thriller opening. The feedback we got from this was all positive. The main comments which were said were about the flashback scene. People did not understand the clip so we decided to make the clip simpler; we also choose to make it black and white so it separated from the clip more and highlighted that she was remembering an event. We believe as a group people did not realise it was a flashback and therefore with the changes we made us think that it would make it clearer that it was a flashback.
  • Another comment made in the screening was that a scream should be added in to create more suspense. Before showing our rough edit our group had discuss doing this as we believed it would have created a more eerie atmosphere in the opening. For our final piece we choose to put the scream in the ending where the murderer is hanging up the photo. This gives the idea that he is remembering the scream she made when he killed her.
  • We also try to make our storyline interesting so would engage with the audience and therefore make an entertaining film. By doing this it would make it more appeal to the audience. We made it an unconventional thriller because as a group we believe this would appeal to our audience. By making it an unconventional thriller it makes it seem that it could happen to anyone and makes it more thrillering and creates more tension for the viewer. The feedback from launching it on you tube and our screening shows people understood our plot and enjoyed the opening so I think our decision was good.
  • Overall I believe that by doing these factors we have made our thriller appeal to our audience.

6) What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
  • Media studies is completely new to me so i have learnt much in a short period of time. To begin the course we used digital camera's to look at different camera shots. Even though using a digital camera was an area I was familiar in using identifying and producing certain camera shots I was not. We looked at shots such as high angle shots, low angle shots, over the shoulder shots and point of view shots and produced a leaflet showing these. In doing this it has helped me to think about where to place the camera and the effect it has on the audience in choosing that shot. Therefore, when beginning my preliminary task I took angle shots highly into consideration as well as looking at them in analysing films.
  • Another major area I was unfamiliar with was editing. In producing my preliminary task I was able to learn some basics of editing. This included features such as translations, slide effect for example making it black and white, how to change the speed of a piece of film and adding sound. By doing these editing skills it has made me realise the importance of editing when producing a film. Even though I have only learnt basic skill I realise you have to be priciest and accurate and you constantly have to think what affect does this have on the audience when producing and editing a successful film.
  • When doing my final edit I used a more complex program this constituted of a more accurate piece in the end. To start with I found it really hard to understand how you imported music move clips ect. However everyone has to start somewhere and by the editing program I can say that I believe that I understand the basics of final cut. I believe that I can alter the length of clips, use certain translation change colour of clips and insert titles on the video. These are the main things I believe I can do with ease.

7) Looking back on your preliminary task; what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
  • Confidence - when using editing program final cut. For my pre-lim task we used ‘I movie’ which is a basic editing program however for my final thriller I used ‘final cut’ which is more complex. To start with I struggled with the concept of this program but by the end of editing period I feel as if I have grasped the basic of ‘final cut’ therefore in using this program I feel more confident.
  • Planning –in the planning for the pre- lim task we did only to a basic standard we did produce a story board however it did not look at camera angles and contained no script so was extremely basic. After we had completed it we began filming straight away. We had no influences and the film we produce was of a basic level. For our thriller we produce case studies and looked at our thrillers to be inspired in ideas for our thriller. We then produced a storyboard which consisted of camera shots which we intended to use so it was more detailed than the premlimary task. We also looked into costumes, location and cast for these we wanted to achieve a unconventional thriller and therefore when choosing and looking into these try to make them as realistic and normal as possible. By being more organised and planning in more detailed I think it allowed us to produce a higher quality film and the success of it I devote to our detailed planning we did.

Influences

Within the group we were all influenced by different films however i personally believe that there are two main thriller that influenced my ideas within the group.

'Lovely Bones' was a thriller which influenced my own ideas this is due the use of a young victim we have adapted. Personally i think a younger victim creates more emotion within the film and therefore makes it a more moving film. The idea of a psychopath stalking his victim is also created in 'Lovely Bones' and the idea we adapted in our film but through the use of photos.

The photo idea was many influenced by 'One Hour Photo' (2002). In this film it consists of the idea of a psychopath stalking there victim through photos. This idea is used within our thriller through the murderer stalking his victim through photos as he has picked his target and then kept a photo as a memory of there death. We wanted to achieve a dramatic thriller and i think by being inspired by 'Lovely Bones' alongside 'One Hour Photo' i think we have achieved the atmosphere which we wanted to create within our thriller.

Screening Results

We did a screening in college to see what students thought of the rough edit of our thriller opening. In looking at the feedback from the students it seems that it is overall positive feedback of the opening. However it has highlighted that the flashback is confusing and therefore when editing in final cut we will need alterations. It may need to be re film if we can not achieve a 'watchable' flashback scene. Thriller opening q's results

Script

In our opening thriller sequence we choose to use little dialogue this is due to believing by having less dialogue it engages the audience to the film. It also makes them want to continue watching the film as they are more intrigued into what is going to happen next which is the target of an opening to a film. The idea of little dialogue if not any was inspired to myself by watching the film 'Brick' in the opening scene no speech is used and personally when i watch the film made me want to watch more and find out what was going to happen next. I like how the music almost did the 'talking' for the film and i wanted to take this idea when creating my thriller. Below is the opening to "Brick".

The Script

Grace - when entering the house "hello"
Grace - looking round the kitchen door "is anybody here"
Grace - going up the stairs "hello the front door was open"

When hanging the photo up Grace screams this gives the idea that the murderer is remembering her scream when he killed her, it also helps to add to the eerie atmosphere that is created.

Clairewhen being given the ring "i thought we agreed no presents"

Prop List

For our thriller i have produce a prop list which consists of all the equipement and props which are needed for our thriller.

Missing Posters - this was designed by Caitlin and Hannah within my group.

Ring - this was brought in by Caitlin with a range of others rings and as a group we decided the one featured in our film would suit the thriller the best.

Newpaper - this was used in the flashback scene by claire to suggest it is a normal day and she is reading the newpaper

Photo trays- these were used in the darkroom scene to put the chemicals in to develop the photo of grace as as memory to the murderer of her death.

Clock - this is used in the backround sound of the darkroom scene to create a more tense atsomphere.

Red lights- these were used in the darkroom scene as they are the saftey lights when developing photos. We particullary like idea of the red lights due to the conetations around it, personally i believe it could been seen as danger warning the audience of the murderer.

Cloth - this is used by the murderer after washing his hands. When he does this it gives the idea that he is washing his hands of the crime he has just cominted.

Equipment

Dolly - this was used in the darkroom scene when viewing the photos, this ensured a steady movement when film this part.

Camera- this was a small hand held camcorder which we used to record the thriller.

Tripod- we used this by attaching our camera to the tripod to ensure when filming no shakes and therefore 'smooth' footage.

Below is one of the props which we used in the opening of the thriller. We choose to use a photo of the character which looked happy to try and highlight how she was a typical normal teenager.

How does the magazine appeal to its target audience?

No Country for Old Men - The Coin Toss Scene

The long shot at the start of the opening of the scene enhances the audience’s awareness of how isolated the surroundings are. This is due to the scene being placed in a dessert, by doing this its creates suspension and uncertainty for the viewer as if something was to happen no one would know about it. By using isolation in this scene it makes it fall under a typical thriller theme.

The use of over the shoulder shots within this scene makes the viewer aware of the relationship between the two characters. It is clear in this scene that there is an uncomfortable relationship; this is enhanced by the expressions which they withhold as well as the dialogue used. By doing this it shows the viewer the characters personalities this is also reflected in there costumes used in the set. The simple checked shirt and braces which one of the characters wears reflects how he is easy going. His clothes also blend into the scenery behind him this could suggest he does not like trouble and tends to like to ‘blend in’ rather than stand out suggesting he is a weak character. Whereas the other character is wearing very dark clothes this could suggest that he is bad due to them being black and this colour is usually compared to evil. Though it could also suggest that he is a strong character due to his clothes standing out from the scenery showing he is bold and intimidating. The contrast in personalities of the characters makes the scene feel uncomfortable for the viewer to watch due to the tension between the characters.

The close up on the peanut wrapper unfolding and then the uneasy expression followed by the old man afterwards builds tension again within the scene. Its makes the other character seem strange and enhances an idea he is untrustworthy. Due the strangeness of the shot it makes the viewer feel uncomfortable, I think the intention is to make the viewer feel how the old man is feeling in this scene.

By placing a window behind the character it reminds the viewer of the isolated surroundings and also makes the viewer falsely suspect something is going to happen in this scene. It gives the idea that the viewer is going to know something is going to happen before the character is aware of it. The sense of shadow on the shelves against the bright window contrasts and therefore highlights this effect further.

Overall in this scene it clearly shows the characters personalities and how they differ. Due to them differing it creates a sense of tension for the audience of the film.

Rough Edit

In our group we produced a rough edit of the thriller in imovie so that we could get feedback on what people thought. This also allowed to use the feedback and therefore make improvements when we come to edit our opening in the programe final cut. We posted our opening on you tube and email it to many people to see what was thought. As this was a rough version there will be many alterations made such as scene shorten, edits improved and more footage added. The email which we sent contained a survey aswell so that we had more controlled feedback. Here is the survey http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/NGJ7P3K

Below i have featured some of the feedback which we got from emailing and posting the thriller on you tube.

"Great idea to the film with the photos at the end. Camera angles with nice smooth movements were good and the vignetting which gave it a moody and creative finish.
Did you do any colour grading to it? Possibly a close up of the door handle showing how slowly and silently the killer is moving may have worked but it's good as it is. It's unconventional with a woman as the killer aswell. The continuity is good, can't seem to see anything out of place, but I am on my phone so can't see the full quality of it. Same about sound, I'll have to listen to it when I'm on a laptop.
Good job overall, well put together little short. With these types of shorts I can imagine a few dolly shots giving it an unnatural and eery feel, but it still works without." - Mark, 18.

"I think it's great, espesh the vignetting in some shots and the overall idea, although I'd change the opening music a bit." - Jack, 16.

"Pretty cool, film quality's a little sketchy but you said this was rough anyway so yeah, it looks pretty awesome."
As you can see some are more detailed than others. We will upload more results soon. - Adam, 17.

"Its a really good short film thing :)
We also did a screening in college to see what students thought of the opening. We choose to give out the same survey as the one featured on the survey monkey.
But I agree to what NPGigs (Nathan) said, make the music a little louder as I couldnt hear it either :)"
Hannah

Some of the feedback is more detailed then others but we are doing a screening in college soon too and therefore will gain more feedback. We will then look into the comments before beginging our edits in final cut.

On Wednesday the 3rd of November we will be working in the dark room developing the film which we shot using a traditional camera. We will also be creating a negative print to view all the negatives as well as creating a test strip for the photo of the victim.

On Thursday the 4th of November we will be shooting the scene of the victim entering the house. For this we will only need the victim (Grace). The props we require consist of the ring and the missing posters. The missing posters are needed as the character is looking for the her friend and the ring is needed as it is what the victim gave to the missing girl.

On Friday the 5th of November we will shooting the flashback scene the characters needed for this scene  the victim (Grace) and the missing person (Claire) are needed. The props we need is a newspaper and a ring. The newspaper is used to create a 'normal' setting and the ring is needed as it is the object which is being given to her friend and is the object which is found in the house and therefore causes the flashback.

One Hour Photo Trailer

Above is the trailer of One Hour Photo this thriller it inspired the idea of the photo developing within our thriller. I really liked the suspense i felt when watching the movie and therefore wanted to include this effect within the thriller i create.

Shots

Below is the basic outline of each shot which my group produced while planning our thriller.

  • Shot one – starts with a black screen and fades into the red lights of the dark room. It is an over the shoulder shot of the murder dropping the photo paper into the tray in the darkroom.

  • Shot two – begins with the meeting of two characters on the corner of the crossroads. One character is a boy the other is a girl, they are both holding missing posters and generally talking. The girl and boy separate in walking down different streets.

  • Shot three – returns to the dark room....the camera shot is a close up on the tap...murder is washing his hands.  Dripping water in the background

  • Shot four – the camera is placed so the girl can be seen leaving one house and follows her round to Catlin’s house.

  • Shot five – point of view shot of Catlin’s house....camera acts as the audience looking at the house.

  • Shot six – returns to the dark room.....close up on picture in the tray now the picture is beginning to come through some of it visible.

  • Shot seven – girl knocks on the door but the door is not shut properly so opens.

  • Shot eight – this is followed by a low angle camera shot of characters feet walking into the house.

  • Shot nine – Girl looks around hallway and places the missing posters down on the table. Girl notices ring on the table.

  • Shot ten – next to the poster is a ring....the ring is of her missing friend. Camera has a close up on the ring.

  • Shot eleven – FLASH BACK! This is of someone giving the missing girl the ring.

  • Shot twelve – girl panics and runs to the door and begins to opening it however door is locked. (close up on handle of the door)

  • Shot thirteen – returns to the dark room.....camera follows along a piece of string containing photos of different young girls dead and focus on the last photo being hung up by the murder of character in the house. This is followed by a scream.

  • Shot fourteen – MISSING title appears suddenly after the scream.

Music

As a team we thought music was a key aspect to a successful opening for our film. We looked through many sites at copyright free music to try and find a piece which created tension but also suited our film idea. We found two pieces of music which we liked the links are below because we thought the two pieces suited we decided to combined them together to create a new piece.

Location

In the beginning of planning our thriller opening we thought about location. The two location we are going to use within our thriller opening are a house and a darkroom.

We choose to use a darkroom as by using a dark place a sense of mystery will be created. Due to the red lights you will only be to see close objects therefore what is beyond the red lights is the unknown and enhances the mystery which will be created in the scene. Our idea is to show the murders hands developing a photo of his target, we want to do an over the shoulder shot of the murder as well but we intend to keep the murders face hidden to create more suspense.

As you can see above this is the darkroom we are using. I think by using a red light it could be interpreted as danger or a warning due to the colour. This will add to the suspense we intend to create in the opening scene.

The other place which we intend to film in is the house. We choose to use an ordinary looking house to create more suspense as it seems to the viewer that this could happen to anyone even themselves which helps to build tension within the opening scene.

Terminology

In this post i am going to explain the basic terminology of composition, editing and sound.

Composition - This is when you refer to the layout of everything within a picture or a camera shot. By adjusting the camera position and angle you can create your desired composition of a shot. There many different types of shot some being long shot, close up and Over the shoulder shots.

Close up Shot -  This shot enables the viewer to see the character closely, it can be used to intimidate the viewer in certain films if that is the desired effect.
Long Shot - This gives the viewer a understanding of there surroundings within the film. For example in a horror film showing a isolated area could build on the tension within the film.
Over the shoulder shot - This shot is used in a conversation scene usually by using
this shot it enables the viewer to see both of the expressions of  the characters  it does this by alternating between the two characters.
In looking at the aspect of  composition it does not just mean you are just looking at the angle the shot is taken at you are also looking why the shot was taken in that particular way and what affect does it have within the film.

Editing - Editing in it's simplest form is the arrangement of footage and sound into the desired order. Editing can also be used to describe more complex forms of footage manipulation, such as computer generated imagery to produce forms of animation. The job of the editor is usually not one that is drawn attention to. It is often said that a good editor makes his work invisible - where the audience is unaware that the editor has put in a lot of work to make the footage 'watchably' fluid.

Sound - the sound is the audio aspect of a film, there are two main types of sound Non-Diegetic and Diegetic. Diegetic sound is where the source that the sound is coming from is visible or can be implied within a action, for example voices of the characters and sounds made by objects in the scene. Non-Diegetic sound is where the sound is not visible on screen or can not be implied in an action for example, narrators voice within a film or music in the background to enhance a mood in the scene.
